Can't find a Safety Valve for the Hydraulic pump on my TE20. While I am repairing the system I want to change the Valve. The valve in my TE20 is like the valve in the TEA20. Namely on the outer most reduced end is a cotter key not a solid hex nut. The Valve called for in parts catalog for this tractor won't work. The housing for the PTO shaft is located directly above the front of the valve. The regular valve called for does not provide enough room and the lower portion of the housing hit the top of the valve. Presently the valve is the one with the cotter pin in the end. I have exhausted all my possible places to find a replacement. Any help would be appreciated. If I can't find one How can I check the origional before reinstalling?

Two types of safety valve were fitted, and I think it was the early one that has the cotter pin in the end - the later one does not have the pin, so must have the hex end on it that you describe.

Both valves are interchangeable - but no, there isn't much room to work, and a stubby spanner is essential, as is being triple jointed and having three hands.

I have heard that some people remove the lower transmission plate to ease access to the valve - but remember to disconnect the control arm fork before you lower the plate, otherwise you will break the control valve. You will of course also need to remove the PTO shaft.

The valve should 'break' (i.e. operate) at 2,200psi when on a test rig - any hydraulics shop ought to be able to help and test it.

Sometimes Ford 'N' safety valves were fitted in error, these 'break' at 1500psi, so the hydraulics don't work as well.

Hope this helps.

I have everything removed; top cover, bottom cover,PTO shaft, side inspection covers everything. I cleaned the plumgers on the pump and replaced the rings on the cylinder.

The system would not pick up weight, but showed no signs of leaks. I tried to pick up wt. as I observed through the inspection covers, before draining system. The oil that came out at draining, looked like carmel topping for Icecream. Hence, I really didn't have an objective as to my real problem when I started.

That is why I did what I did and thought I had better change the Relief Valve. My local Ferguson Outlet said that valve isn't made any more.

Thanks for your help. One of these days I would like to have your e-mail address so I could communicate with you directly.

Thanks, Ray

If you still can't get a spare, try Holland-Brand at www.holland-brand.co.uk or The Old 20 Parts Co. (where I got mine from) on +44 1322 792698 or email [email protected] They will both ship to you by post (not expensive UPS or FedEx or DHL).

I hate posting my email address as the spam filters get clogged. Also it means I can choose what I reply to, and feel no pressure to respond; if you are having problems, so will others who don't have the courage to post - and by posting openly we can all benefit and enjoy these tractors.

Once you have it reassembled, take great care over the quadrant adjustment - it is incredibly sensitive, and makes a huge difference to the 3pt behaviour - I only discovered just how sensitive this thing is recently - huge respect to Harry Ferguson. Just a tip.

See my response on the thread below on ploughing - the link in there will take you to the right page for info on setting up the hydraulics.

Good luck.

James, I am almost too ashamed to tell you this story but here goes. I have this young fellow helping me once in a while. He was there the day I wanted to put the pump back in the tractor from below. He said he wanted to try and but the pump up in the housing. He told me he couldn't get it in because of the relief valve was to big to fit under the PTO shaft housing. This led me to believe we had the wrong valve because the new one is shaped differently than the old.

Without looking myself, I took his word for it. Finally I crawled under the tractor to investigate and found he was trying to put pump up in housing backwards. The new relief valve WILL FIT. So, I don't have a problem.

This is as much my fault, if not more, than his. I should have looked at the problem myself. Sorry for all the hassle. Please forgive me.

I'll keep you posted.

It's not been any hassle - sorry I've been offline for a few days - I've been away from work and am now logging in from home - hence different IP address.

Glad you found the cure, though!

Interesting about the early pump reflief valve settings being 1500 to 1900psi - I never knew that.

Good luck.

Holland-Brand only lists the 1900-2300 psi valve. That's the one that does not fit in my tractor. The Old 20 Parts doesn't list, or at least I can't find it. Sent to e-mail but haven't received a reply yet. It appears my TE20's serial # is before 83271, so the relief valve is 1500-1900 psi. and the one with the cotter pin holding spring and ball in front of valve.

Checked several hydraulic shops today and they have no way of testing my valve for psi. So if I can't find a new valve I quess I will have to reinstall my old one and hope it is ok.

Will keep you informed.
