My TO30 has used 30W30 non-detergent summers and 20W20 winters since Dad bought it new in 1953. The engine's never been apart except for a valve adjustment. It doesn't use any oil between changes, has good compression, and starts in any weather we've had here in SW Indiana. Unless you've replaced all the original engine seals(overhaul), detergent oils will slowly deteriorate them, as they were not designed to withstand the additives; or so says an old(81) former Harry Ferguson dealer/mechanic friend.

My 2085 doesn't leak a drop, but the engine was done in 1973. I guess by then, they would be using multi-grade compatible oil seals. As an interesting sidebar, dad phoned Valvoline to ask their recommendation of oil for his old hot rod(68 302 rebuilt in 85) They said don't use synthetic oil as synth compatible seals weren't widely in use til around 90. They recommended Valvoline max life which is allegedly freindlier to the seals inolder engines.

Main thing is to change it regularly and use good quality oil. If the tractor turns over easy in the winter with 30 wt., personally I see no reason to change to a lighter oil in the winter. On the other hand, if it gets cold enough that it turns over slow, a multiwt might be just the ticket. Most likely, for your choice of oil, there are other factors to take into consideration also, such as whether it has been overhauled and whether the oil pressure is strong or not, but those are different questions.

Ditto for me. 10W30 Valvoline in the motor all year and WalMart no name 10W30 in the back and the loader all year. Zero problems. And if you ever have to start it with the crank, you'll be glad its got multi-grade in it!
