The three point raises when the engine is started and goes down when the engine stops. the up down lever gives no control of the up down movemnet. Does anyone have any idea what I should check?

That sounds like a stuck control valve very common on those tractors I have probably unstuck a 1000 of them through the years. This is from page 2 on my web site Three Point Control Valve Sticking The control valve will get trash in them & cause them to stick. They will also stick under a heavy load if the oscillator for the valve is not working the valve. You can usually get them unstuck by removing the access plate on the right side of rear housing & working the two small arms with the roller in them by hand.

I'd guess the linkage is disconnected inside the hyds area. Remove the inspection cover on the right side and inspect things with a flashlight and inspection mirror. You can't do much without knowing what you are looking at when things are correct first though. A shop manual is inexpensive knowledge if you dont' already know what you are doing.
