Having problems keeping a charge on my battery. Just purchased the battery July of 2002 so it should still be good. I am showing a charge on the meter, but after cutting 4 acres their is not enough juice to restart if I shut her down.

Is it possible to show a charge on the meter and not be charging the battery?

I would appreciate any help or guidance on how to troubleshoot this problem. Thanks.

My battery was connected with reversed polarity at some time in its life...therefore it does not charge at all.

I can start this tractor (TO 20) many times and run it (couple hours at least) without running the battery down. I don't know how long it takes you to do the 4 acres, so maybe yours is running a lot longer than mine.

You could check the voltage across the battery. Check it with the tractor off, and then running with meter showing a charge....the voltage across the battery terminals should be a volt or so higher when being charged.

Don't accept the tractor ammeter as accurate. Use a VOM to check the voltage at about 1/2 throttle, it should read between 6.5 and 8 volts depending upon the battery condition and state of charge. Another method is to install a ammeter+shunt in place of the tractor ammeter. The 6V generator output is 16-19amps, but once again battery condition affects the amps at this point.
