I have a TO 30 that seems really sluggish on starting. I've cleaned terminals and wiring and I'm wondering if the problem would best be solved by converting to a 12 volt system. Any ideas? Mark.

What size battery cables are you using? Make sure they are 2 gauge or bigger. The 6 gauge used on 12 volt systems doesn't work well on six volt systems. Four gauge is borderline. Next, the most prevalent problem I've found is a bad connection where the ground (positive) cable is attached to the tractor. Last, sometimes the switch (the one on top of the bellhousing) isn't operatiing quite right. You know you can adjust it. There are slotted holes to allow you to slide it to make contact better. Just three thoughts and all cheap to address. I wouldn't convert to 12 volts or 8 volts or any other volts until I found the problem. My 2 cents.

If all conections are good still turns slow go for an 8 volt battery simplest fix.

Is the wire terminal post loose on the starter?
Check inside the starter case and see if the post turned twisting off one of the bus bars to the field. Easy to solder on. Happened to me.

Check battery volt to starter, maybe internal switch is going bad. Should have plenty of snap if all is right. 12v will spin slow if something is wrong.
