I have a 1948 te20, I can put it in gear but it wont move. The gear's will turn but wont turn it with any resistance. Is there some kind of key or pin that broke? It worked fine and then just quit. Thank's for any help Shane

Hi Shane Your problem sounds like the clutch is slipping to me. If the gears turn when it is in neutral but stop when you put it in gear. Check your pedal free travel adjustment.

If you can select all the gears with the lever it wont be a selector problem, if the drive is going to the rear axle but not turning the wheels it could be the crown wheel and pinion or simply a broken half shaft. To check if the axle is being driven remove one of the round side plates (the one with the dipstick is easiest) and with the gear lever in one of the gears and the clutch engaged check if the drive shaft from the gearbox to the axle is turning,(its slightly above the side plate hole, inside) if it is, its either of the axle problems above, if it isnt, its something nasty in the gearbox. BE CAREFUL IT DOESN'T RUN OVER YOU WHILE YOU ARE DOING THIS CHECK, you could jack up the rear wheels to be safe. If, as you try this, one of the rear wheels wobbles slightly, that is the one with a broken half-shaft.

My 1985 Chevy P-up will drive in reverse but does not want to go anywhere in Drive or 2nd and 1st. The truck shifts just fine but doesn't move in the drive positions? Thank you !

first s I would take shifter out of trans just two bolts and pull it out sometimes the knob on end or the rails that it fits into get worn and ball end slips out you can build it up with weld and grind it off to make a better fit. After you get it out take a pry bar or big screw driver and align the shift rails then put it back in and see if you have gears again.

There is a shear tube in transmission of 35s that's designed to protect transmission against excessive abuse. Not sure if 20's also have one but if it does, you can see it through side covers.

TE-20 DOES HAVE A SHEAR COUPLER. PART # IS 825574M91. THIS IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE FROM MF. TRY A SALVAGE YARD. I AM AN MF DEALER AND LOOKED THIS UP IN PARTS BOOK.

Shear tube or not, it can still shear the crown wheel and pinion or a half-shaft and these were quite common with rough use (loaders usually) and early TE20's did not have a shear tube, there was a tube but it wasnt a shear tube, believe me I repaired enough of them at the time.
