TO-35 Steering

Did some grading today and as I made a turn out of a rut, I heard a loud 'tick', then lost all steering. What could've happened? I've checked the wheel to shaft key- it's O.K. The steering wheel spins freely. The wheels turn from direct force. I'm thinking ball nut assy. Any other ideas???

You are correct in your thinking, it will be the ball nut assy, you have bust the return tube open and the balls have finished up in the bottom of the steering box. It is possible to repair it all without any great expense usually, just make sure the 2 halves of the tube are ok and rebuild it all. Fiddly and messy though, hold the balls in position with a heavy grease while you do it so they dont spill all over the place and it should be ok.

Thanks for the reply. My manual says that the shaft and ball nut are usually not separated for any kind of service- that they serviced as an assembly. If the ball nut is broken, it seems that I'd have to get a replacement shaft/ball nut as a single unit. Besides, I'm a bit hesitant about repairing the ball nut- i.e. what if it just lets go again? While I haven't checked yet, I have a feeling that this may be a difficult assembly to find a replacement for and possibly even more so for the individual parts of the ball nut. I hope I'm wrong, though...
Thanks for the tip on the heavy grease, should I go that route.

you are right about the ball and nut assy, but we used to repair them and if you cant get hold of them you may have to do just that.

Thanks again for the reply. I removed the ball nut assembly yesterday. It was just as you had said, tubes busted open, balls in the bottom of the housing...but worse: The ballnut casting has a split, right down the middle of the teeth and pieces of the tubes have fragmented away. There's no retrieving that ball(nut)!
I've checked with 3 or 4 suppliers but to no avail; two have shaft/ballnut assemblies for manual steering- mine has power steering. Actually, right now, mine has NO steering. Any leads on a parts source?

Thanks so much for all your help and so quickly, too! I've made a few inquiries and found that the steering shaft assembly is not as hard to find as I first thought. It's just a matter of ordering one and I should be up and running again soon.

I've got the same problem...bought a new shaft assembly but very hard to put back in. Any tips ?
