TO30 loss of power

I have had a To30 for a few years. Has run fine but needed some tlc, until a week ago when I had a major loss of power. I do not have very much knowledge with engines. However, I cannot put it in gear without it stalling out. A friend and myself put a new rotor,points, manifold,plugs,plug wires, exhaust pipe and valve cover gasket, which it needed. when we opened the valve cover, some of the tappets were laying off the valves. We adjusted the valve gaps. Checked compression and the no1 piston is ok, but the other 3 have no reading. Any suggestions were to go next? help

First remove all plugs and squirt a little motor oil in the cylinders 1 at a time and check compression.If they pump up you have weak rings,If not could be sticky or burnt valve thus loss of compression another possibilty is a blown head gasket this will point you in the direction you need to go....My experiance has been sticky and worn valves most of the time...If you have to remove the head might as well freshen up the ol gal while you in there....

thanks for the imput, I think that clears up a fair amount for me. I,m leaning towards freshening up the ol gal anyway.
