Recently posted about 1949 TE-20, Continental engine, 12 V. starting fine and then running for a while, then stopping, then took a minute or two before I could start it and then the cycle would begin again. Running time became less and less until it only ran a minute or so. Anyhow, I came upon the ignition resistor. A guy told me that this ceramic block with two spade connections which was connected between the coil and the ignition switch of my tractor, should have 12+ volts running in from the ignition switch and 6+ running out. He said this kept the points from burning out. Mine has the same voltage (12+) running in as out. What should I do? Do I need a new ignition resistor? Is this why the tractor keeps stopping? Where can I find a wiring diagram that I can check my wiring with a diagram showing a changeover from 6 volt to 12 volt?

Been there done that. A motto I picked up from a book once is "carburetor is a French word that means leave it alone the problem is in the ignition". My TO30 had the same problem. My wirewound resistor only drops the voltage when it is under load. The condenser "sees" a full 12 volts spike as the coil starts to draw current. The replacement condensers even right from Massey seem to be perforating thru the dialectric. I suspect they are the same constuction as the 6 volt spec. originals. My cure, from my junk box, was a condenser from a 1974 Toyota truck (18RC engine). It was designed for 12 volt cranking, then a drop for running. It can take that spike and then some without perforating. I had my Toyota dealer order me 3 new ones to keep for spares in the future since they are getting scarce. So far the one from my junk box is still working after almost a year with no problems.

I had already tried replacements from Massey, an aftermarket dealer and rebuilding the carb and replacing the screen in my float bowl. The resistor was almost new and has not been changed.

Hey Terry, Look again at Crem's suggestion to check the fuel supply. At one point I had a thick layer of rust grains in the float bowl -- a bit more and it would have prevented the float valve from opening. If that's your problem, the tractor would run till it used up the gas already in the float bowl, then have to wait for the tiny trickle through the float valve to resupply the float bowl. I put in an inline fule filter and haven't had this problem again. Good luck!

The resistor will read 12 volts if the ignition points are not closed. You will have to turn your engine until the points are closed and then read between the coil side of the resister and ground, to see the voltage that you have to the coil. You may not have an ignition problem? You may want to check the fuel flow to the carburator in case there is a fuel restriction.

Thanks a lot John!

I read the article and I was wondering how to measure if the ceramic block ballast was doing it's job, ie, how to tell if the ceramic block is bad. Do I measure between the positive and negative terminals of the coil to determine the amperage drop? You may be able to tell by my question that I am not a mechanic, but I can, with good instructions, read a meter. Thanks a lot. These tractors are sure a good learning experience!!!!

It is very easy to tell if your resistor is good or bad. First disconnect all wires to the resistor, then connect an ohm meter to the resistor; one lead to one end of resistor & other lead to other end of resistor. If your meter shows a reading of a few ohms then your resistor is good, if your meter shows nothing or a very high reading then your resistor is bad (open). If you have 12 volt system on your tractor you can use a 12 volt coil and don't need a resistor. If you want to use a 6 volt coil in a 12 volt system then you must use a resistor to keep the points from burning/pitting.
