Ring gear

My TEA has chewed up the ring gear. Can I flip it around on the flywheel, or do I need a new one? Thanks.

The ring gear usually only fits only on one way, look to see which side the teeth have the lead taper, and that goes towards the starter pinion. Normally the ring gear is only tapered on one side only, so you need a new ring gear. If you try to turn the ring gear round and use the non lead edge towards the starter pinion it will not engage very easily and wont last very long if it works at all, plus removing the ring gear and refitting the same one may mean that the ring gear is a slack fit on the flywheel. You may find that part of your problem is that the pinion is not flying out quickly enough to engage with the ring gear, maybe it wants cleaning in the bendix drive or maybe the motor is sluggish and wants servicing

You can flip it Depending on how bad it is...and if its tapered... some tappered cannot be flipped.. square flanged can be....I would say if its not chewed up more than 1/2 across teeth pattern and if its square flip it...easy to warm up with a torch and tap off and then back on I would also check starter drive mesh depth to see if it needs shimimg...I do it all the time..
