I need some help. I'm new to tractor restoration. My grandpa left me a Harry Ferguson tractor.... the model # is 30 no TO or TE or anything... I have the serial number but the numbers don't help... if you could help me decide which I have...I need to order some parts to restore it.. THanks in advance

I think I agree with Phil and Rusty. The only Continental engine sent to England for assembly into tractors was the Z120. Thus if it has a Z129, it must be a US-built TO30. There was no TE30. The tractors with Continental engines have a welded-in spacer between the front of the engine and the front axle/radiator mount. The Continental is about an inch shorter, than the Standard engine. (Standard diesel is longer, though). I've got a TEA-20 with a Continental Z120 installed with spacers in front. Also some fooling was done with the flywheel to crankshaft bolt arrangement. Seems like it still uses the Engish distributer and starter unit. I'm trying to set things right.

TE models are UK version. TE stands for Tractor England. TO is normal US version and stands for Tractor Overseas. Main TE series models were TEA (petrol) TED (vapourising oil aka TVO) and TEF (diesel). Don't know much about TO models but as far as I can see there is a TO20 (4 speed gearbox, I think) and a TO30 which I think corresponds to the UK model FE or MF35 which has a 6 forward speed and 2 reverse greabox with high/low ranges)

The TE-20/TO-20/TO-30/TEA were all 4-speeds. The TO/FE/MF 35 Deluxe models had a Hi-low/3-speed transmission giving 6 forward and 2 reverse speeds. The TEA-20-85mm was comparable to the TO-30 in engine size/horsepower.

If you take the serial number to the serial numbers reference in the left column on this page you can follow the successive links and drill down to find out what you have.

My problem is that the serial number will fit in the TO 30 and the TE 30 tractors... Whats the difference between the TE and the TO... Sorry for being so ignorant about this.... but I'm wanting to learn and do it right.. THanks Wes

What engine do you have? That should answer your question. If the engine serial starts "Z129..." or "Z120..." you have a Continental engine and a "TO" tractor. Z129 indicates a TO-30 and Z120 indicates a TO-20. If not, you may have the Standard engine, and perhaps a "TE" tractor. TO is for Tractor Overseas, meaning made in the US (Detroit), and TE is for Tractor England, meaning made in the land of the redcoats. Hope that helps.

Don't think they made a TE-30. You got your TE-20, TO-20 and TO-30. Then there are some different versions of the TED20. There is the TEA, TED, TEH, TVO, TEF.

Hi Rusty,

Oh yes, we liked our TEs over here, but some models listed (lamp oil especially) were for export only.

This is lifted from the Friends of Ferguson Heritage website:

Model Year TE-20 Tractor with Continental Z-120 petrol engine 1946-1948 TEA-20 Tractor with Standard petrol engine 1947-1956 TEB-20 Tractor with Continental Z-120 petrol engine - Narrow 1946-1948 TEC-20 Tractor with Standard petrol engine - Narrow 1948-1956 TED-20 Tractor with Standard V.0.engine 1949-1956 TEE-20 Tractor with Standard V.0. engine- Narrow 1949-1956 TEF-20 Tractor with Standard diesel engine 1951-1956 TEH-20 Tractor with Standard lamp oil engine 1950-1956 TEJ-20 Tractor with Standard lamp oil engine -Narrow 1950-1956 TEK-20 Tractor with Standard petrol engine~Vineyard 1952-1956 TEL-20 Tractor with Standard V.0. engine~Vineyard 1952-1956 TEM-20 Tractor with Standard lamp oil engine-Vineyard 1952-1956 TEP-20 Tractor with Standard petrol engine - Industrial 1952-1956 TER-20 Tractor with Standard V.O. engine- Industrial 1952-1956 TES-20 Tractor with Standard lamp oil engine - Industrial 1952-1956 TET-20 Tractor with Standard diesel engine - Industrial 1952-1956

I'm only slightly surprised that after the TET, the alphabet was never completed!!

The TVO (Tractor Vapourising Oil) you referred to was a fuel with low tax at that time - we can still mix a close approximation to it using a ratio of 2 gallons unleaded petrol, 4 gallons kerosene, a quart of oil, and half a pint of Castrol R two-stroke oil (for the all important right smell!)

Mad? Probably. . . .Happy? . . .As a pig in (&^%
