What is this in my To-20 Block??

I hope this pic posts as its a first timer. Anyways this loose clothlike fiber was just barely protruding from that hole in the block. What is it and what to do with it?????

Dunner I sent you the large pic of the thing protuding. James I couldn't send you one but if you get me an email address I will send it, its really a decent picture. I am just glad the thing didn't come out and wrap around the crank. As it was it was down 1/2" or so. It seems like a dry passage in the block but since I have never been there before I don't know. One thing for sure I will run it down before it goes back together. Thanx for the help guys.

After seeing the picture it really does look like the string or fabric material that seals the rear main cap to the block. It has been 25 or so years since I had my TO 20 apart but that is my guess. As far as the string falling out wouldn't the pan hold the string in place?

I have been following this problem of yours so will give you my spin. The string you are looking at seals the rear main bearing cap to the block .
This is only a guess. Look carefully where the string protrudes from the block. Could it be at the dividing line between the rear cap and the block? I think there is a factory part for this string also but if you dont have the correct part you poke string in the hole with a squared off nail to seal the void. I could be wrong on this however. Well, like you say, it definitely isn't the rope seal from the rear main bearing!!

I did my bottom end rebuild a couple of years ago, and I am wondering if the hole that rope comes out of is threaded? If so, a previous owner may have used the rope as a sort of soft plug for an undersize bolt to grip onto - like a Rawlplug - if you know those things. Is there a similar hole in the sump for a bolt to go thro?

The hole isn't anything to do with oil feeds, so I'd be tempted to pull it out, and see what happens . . . . . .

Like you, stumped, no idea. But the picture's good.
