HI. I have taken apart my carberator to try and see if there is a problem. (the tractor only runs smooth on 1/2 choke, adjusting the screws does not seem to help). There is no noticable sediment or worn parts. I did not get a rebuild kit because I don't know if there is a problem. I am wondering what I should take apart for cleaning or where to look for a likely problem. The owners and shop manual do not address inside the carb. Any suggestions? Or should I be looking somewhere else? Thanks in advance for any response. VA.

HI. Thanks for all the responses. I checked the screens in the bowl and at the carb, they look good. As far as the plugs and wiring go it all looks to be in good shape but I have not actually checked any of it. I think James may be on to something with the air leak. Starting last summer I started to get what I thought was an leak from the exhaust manifold. I didn't even think of it concerning this problem. I looked at it today and it looks like it might have been from the intake manifold. Of course without the carb on I didn't run it but it looks like the stains are from the top of the intake manifold. If it is, is it as simple as pulling off the manifold and sealing it, or do I need a new gasket? Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. VA.

Sorry for the late response - missed it. A little bit of detective work does wonders!

Personally, I'd put a new gasket on as the exhaust gases will have trashed the old one - and you will then be secure in the knowledge that your new gasket, and tight manifold bolts have eliminated at least one possible leak.

Don't use gasket sealer - it gets too hot.

As James pointed out, needing choke to run smooth usually means you are getting too much air and therefore have an air leak somewhere. However, needing a richer mixture to run well could be a symptom of an electrical problem as well. If you haven't changed points and plugs and set the timing lately, that might be something to look at. In other words, by running rich you may be masking the real problem or part of the real problem.

I had the same problem a few months back, I tryed everything. I took the carb off myself, cleaned it all up , put it back on and still the same problem. I took it off again after I got a manual, thinking I missed something, still nothing. I was so frustrated. I finally ended up taking it to my local Ferguson dealer, they put in a new kit and cleaned it from top to bottom, set the carb up properly. All I had to do was put it back on and BINGO, she run like she was brand new. So when dont have experience in doing this kinda stuff it sure makes a person feel humble when a pro can literaly do the same thing you have already done and it works for them. It was the best money I ever spent, next to buying the proper manuals for the tractor. Good luck

Also check for air leaks on the carb/manifold gasket, inlet manifold gasket, and around the throttle spindle. Air leaks in any or all of these areas will also cause the symptoms you describe, as they will mean the tractor runs weak.

A very small leak will give this problem - use gasket sealer on the carb/manifold joint and ensure the inlet manifold is tight.

It would be worth checking that you have oil in the oil bath air cleaner - no or too little oil will also make strange things happen.

hi i had the small filter where the fuel line connects to the carb it sets back inside the carb just loosen the brass nob i think its about an inch long might be a place to start. then make sure you have sufficient gas flow to the carb also check screen in sediment bowl hope it helps
