TO30 vs 8N

I have been looking at a TO 30 for sale and am also considering a Ford 8N for restoration and light duty mowing use. Would like opinions as to which is more favorable in terms of parts cost and availibilty, reliability of the engines and trans, weak points for each and so on. What say you? Thnx Bman

You need to be careful when buying a TO-30. Watch out for the old cracked block. You can't see the crack till you pull the head. A cracked block on the 8n can sometimes be seen on the side off the engine. The ferguson is easrier to work on. I have both and like the fords best.

Much on this in the archives. As to features, probably biggest advantage of 8N is it has position control as well as draft control and TO-30 only has draft control. You can easily add position control to the old Fergies for about $80 via either of two kits which are easy to install. Probably biggest advantage of TO-30 over 8N is it has an overhead valve engine and will outpull an 8N in similar condition in the opinion of most who have owned both, including me. I like the 8N brake setup a little better. The Fergies are usually less expensive. With the easy raise hood, the Fergies are easier to work on, and much easier than the older 8Ns which had front mount distributors. There are more places that sell 8N parts, but I don't notice much difference in price if any. Hope that helps.
