T0-20 Carburetor overhaul

My 1949 TO-20 has a Marvel Schebler TSX361 carb and needs an overhaul. I've tried cleaning it and adjusting the float myself, but I can't get the tractor to run. And it worked fine for the 2 years prior that I've owned the tractor. It fires and runs for about 3-5 seconds on starting fluid going into the manifold, but won't keep going. I know the float was stuck one time because gas ran out after I turned the fuel line valve after it sat over the winter. So I think it's time for an overhaul. (By the way, it the TSX 361A interchangable with the TSX 361?)

Does anyone have a good carb repair shop they can recommend? I'm in Minnesota, but can mail it. Or would I be better off buying a rebuilt one and sending in the old like I see in some of the ads? Would a Zenith carb be better? I'm leaning towards sending the Marvel out for an overhaul since it worked fine for 50 years...

Hi Jeff,
I have a 1949 TE-20 with a Marvel-Schebler carb. I got an overhaul kit from NAPA a couple of years ago for about $20 and felt it had good instructions and was easy to install. I wound up putting the original float valve and seat back in, because the NAPA wouldn't shut off the fuel flow completely. My big problem was rust flakes drifting down from the tank -- I had over 0.25" of rust grains in the float bowl! So I also put in an in-line fuel filter and have been very pleased with the results. If the shaft for your main butterfly still has a good seat, your carb is a good candidate for an overhaul. Good luck! Tex

Thanks. The carb looked okay so I've sent it off to a place in Canada for the overhaul and I'll try the in-line filter when I put it together. I'm also draining all last year's gas and start with fresh this time!
