Drove an hr. today to look at a 1955 Ferg 35, man said was excellent mechanically,low hours. It started fine, sounded fine, didn't smoke, clutch pedal supported his claim of low hours, it was hardly worn, but when I tried to pull out in 2nd or 3rd gear (normal range) it would stall out. Low range no problem, but at even more than half throttle in (normal) it wouldn't start out in 2nd gear. To make it short, he said he didn't know why it wouldn't go. (he's a mechanic by trade) What do you guys think is wrong, and what am I looking at to repair. I'm not afraid to try, but unable to split a tractor. I'm thinking clutch at least. Thanks

sounds like it could be ignition timing. I've seen out of time engines behave that way.

If he's a 'mechanic', he otta be able to figure it out.

If it were the clutch, it'd slip....but not stall out.

Sounds like either the engine is weak, and maybe just rigged to run smoothly when not under load....or the rear-end or the tranny may be getting tight. Could also just be a sticky brake- but if that were the case, I'm sure the dude would've fixed it.

Tread carefully! (unless it is such a bargain that it doesn't matter)
