jeff in Ohio wrote about the oil from walmart,this is jeff from Mass. i just changed the oil in my tractor last night i bought the walmart oil,i didn't get the GL-1 90 because it doesn't say mineral oil on it,but the price sticker on the shelf in front of the oil did say mineral oil on it. i bought the oil that says heavy duty tractor hydraulic and transmission oil,on the back of the jug it says recommended for year round use in farm,construction and industrial type equipment where a common pump or single fluid is used in the transmission,hydraulics,differential,final drives,power take off,power steering and wet brakes. it has a cross reference chart on the back that says massey ferguson-m-1135,m-1141,m-1129a (it does not say m1103) also the 2 gallon jugs are a better deal because you need 6 gallons anyway so you get 3 (2gallon jugs)it comes out to be cheaper than a 5 gallon bucket and a 2 gallon jug. Why not get the oil i just described? it says its for transmission/hydraulics/differential.I also bought the R and O anti wear hydraulic oil for the loader on the front of the tractor from walmart(7.88 for 2 gallons)

Jeff,

I guess the whole point of my lower post was that I called the manufacturer of the Wal-mart GL-1 (Quaker State) and both on their web site and telephone tech support confirmed that the GL-1 is a pure mineral oil even though the jug does not say it.

They also confirmed that the wal-mart stuff meets at least the minimum GL1 requirements.

I guess thats like saying that the standard it "pro football team" you have Superbowl champians Tampa Bay Buck's and then there is my beloved Bengals. Both meet the spec but quality is quite different.

GL-1 means mineral. Even though it doesn't say it, it is. I usually use only GL-5 in all of my tractors. I buy it by the drum.

Jeff, I had bought some of that same WAL*MART oil for an 8N that I briefly had- as the oil meets the Ford specs- but when I compared it to the proper oil from the NH dealer for my Fergie, I noticed the Wally*World oil was a LOT thinner. For that reason, I'm afraid to use it in my TO-20.

I figures: My tractor is 54 years old, and still going strong- don't want to ruin it to save a few bucks on oil. But I sure wish Wal*Mart made the right stuff- as the dealer oil is awfully expensive! (makes you take care of leaks right away!)

Richie - with which WalMart oil did you compare the dealer provided oil? the R&O oil or the GL-1 (90 wt)??

Come to think of it....it wasn't the Wal*Mart oil that I compared- it was that TSC Universal stuff!

Think the Wal*Mart stuff might be viable?

My fergy runs on 10w30 from front to back, including the loader. I have had no trouble, although i will admit I don't beat on it too much. I bushhog, auger, and drag a blade mostly.I put good Valvoline 10w30 in the motor, and $.99 stuff in the back.

Interesting. My old Fergie bush-hogs 27 acres about once a month- and sometimes discs and grades- and it works like a champ....I'd hate to shorten its' life or buy myself trouble by skimping a little on oil....but it is tempting!

How long have you been using the multigrade in everything? (I'm not gonna be the one to experiment....but when I find that it's worked for others over the long-haul, I may be convinced!)

long,sorry. when I got my TEA, it was working fine filled with rusty water. It had sat outside. I putin the recomended MF gear lube. That stuff was really hard to pump, especially in the winter. Then i thought, the transfer case in my 4X4 uses the factory recommended 10W30 oil. This truck has been used to push snow since new in 1976. Pushing snow with a big block V-8 and running 70MPH is way more abuse than that 28HP fergy could ever dream of dishing out. This is the second season with it in the back and the loader, and the third with 10w30 in the motor.I also stuck a big magnet in the big drain plug. Next time I drain, I'll look at it and report.

i would just spend a few more dollars and have a good peace of mind i got better things to worry about than am i screwing up my tractor
