I would suspect that you have either got a bad earth somewhere, or that your starter solenoid is dying. First of all, remove all small gauge (thick) wiring from the battery to ground and positive connections, clean them all with emery paper and or a file, and reassemble them with a bit of grease to prevent later oxidation of the contacts. All the time you are doing this, mutter the mantra "Clean, bright and tight . . .clean, bright, and tight". Then see if you have fixed the problem. You can have a voltage showing, but that is not the same as having any current available to do the work you need for the starter motor. Current is sapped by high resistance (bad) connections. If that doesn't do the trick, replace your starter solenoid, over here they are about 10 pounds, but you can probably get them for around $9. Someone your side of the pond will know the part number I would think. Often when a solenoid is on the way out it will behave as you describe, and make hopeful clicking noises, but not make good contact. Welcome to the wonderful world of Ferguson!!
