Does this happen when the engine is cold, or all the time? If all the time, suspect the pressure relief valve in the filter body (not the can with the filter in) is stuck shut, so no excess oil is dumped at higher revs.

On the Standard engine this is a relatively easy job to fix and involves unscrewing the top spring-loaded bolt head, removing the spring, and checking to see if the 'bucket' type valve is free to move. Watch your eyes, those springs can jump if you don't watch 'em!!

Never attacked a Continental so cannot comment, but would suspect same problem - someone here has probably removed the PRV assembly on one of these.

If you have a shop manual, read that first before approaching filter body with spanner/wrench.

DO NOT adjust or unscrew the PRV setting to 'adjust the problem out'. It won't help and will damage your engine eventually.

Further to my posting yesterday, which was done on memory (not always reliable), you will also need to remove/unscrew the smaller adjustable (has slot in end) PRV screw and spring, which is fitted with a lock nut.

You will have to do this to get access to the PRV, which is a ball bearing about 5mm across. This is the bit which may be stuck in position, so when you hit 15psi, the ball bearing doesn't lift from its seated position, and dump the excess oil.

To make life easier, measure the distance from the top of the screw to the lock nut BEFORE you unscrew everything, then you can get a good approximation to the original set-up when you reassemble the PRV assembly.

Hope this helps.

Thanks your advice seems to have done the trick. Now I can concentrate on getting her looking mint for our local fair and vintage rally. If anyone reading this would like to attend the vintage rally it is due to be held on the 24th of May 2003 in Tamalaght O'Crilly, County Londerry, Northern Ireland. Bring your tractors along and pay at the gate.
