I had a very smart man tell me to put kerosene in where you put the oil for transmission/hydraulics/differential - after i have drained the oil out of it, to clean some of the sludge out,he said not to use the hydraulics but do start tractor and drive it around a little bit with the kerosene in it, then drain it and put the proper oil in it, does this sound like a good idea or not, if not why would it be bad to do?Another question, i found GL-1 gear oil at walmart 5gallon bucket it does not say mineral oil on it,is this oil good to use,the GL1 is 90 weight. there was another bucket there that said tractor hydraulic and transmission oil used for farm equipment where a common pump or single fluid is used in the transmission, hydraulics, differential, final drives, power take off, power steering and wet brakes, this bucket did not say GL1 or minereal oil on it or give the weight of the oil, which of these buckets should i use or neither one? thanks for the help.

If you think there is lot of sludge, I would also recommend you pull the PTO shaft and drop the pump and then clean everything in the cavities with kerosene as well as the pump disassembled if you want to feel real good about the job. Besides it is a fun learning experience, but get a manual that tells you how to drop the pump correctly and disassemble it and assemble it. I found the sludge(mixture of water, dirt and oil) very difficult to remove without this process. Putting the new oil in a pristine system is a good feeling.

GL-1 is correct. It takes 6 gallons if you get it drained completely, which you might not, so don't add it all until you know for sure. To drain it, remove all three drains, smallest first. Let it drain overnight or at least several hours. Flushing with kero as the fellow said is ok. Also reach inside the drains as best you can and pull whatever gunk out you can. Lots of info on this subject if you search the archives.
