I recently bought a Fergie at a swap meet, infact I haven't even got it home yet. The tractor has a Standard-Vanguard gas engine. It seem to be an FE35.

There is still alot that I don't understand about this tractor to do with
where it came from and how it got here.

I bought it from a guy who said he bought it new near in the central valley of California. He thought he bought it in 1956. If it is an FE35 the serial number is from about 1958. (that was a long time ago he could be wrong by a year or so)

It is has Standard - Vanguard motor. Near the serial number plate is another
name plate that seem to be in a foreign language, maybe Swedish or something. Something like "Nordisk Tractor KBHVN SV" Anyone out there got a guess what that is?

Which is worth more money, a 35 with a Standard gas engine or a Continental gas engine?

Which is stronger? is the rest of the running gear and sheetmetal the same on both?

How many of the Massey Ferguson FE35 sold in the US used the Standard gas engine?

Thanks again for the help.

Nordisk Tractor KBHVN SV:

That was the danish sole distributor of the Ferguson tractors and accessories.
KBHVN is an abbreviation of Kbenhavn = Copenhagen
and SV simply means SW : sydvest = southwest.

No mystery there. As for how it wound up in CA, it might have been labeled for shipment in Denmark, and then redirected to the US.

The sheet metal is quite different on the Coventry, England built FE35's, more round and with detachable grille.

You will have no problems with the Standard gas engine. Just be sure to check lube oil and water.

The text on the danish posting from James, UK is a novelty letter to a member of a bicycle club concerning a fergie given to him on some occasion.

If you give me the exact text on the danish nameplates, I'll translate the contents for you.

Henning
Thanks for the information. I have been trying to get a picture of the front sheetmetal because mine looks rather different then the pictures I've seen to other Massey-Fergusons. How many years had the different sheetmetal? What are the serial number sequences for these tractors? Wouldn't Nordisk be the one who would install a Nordisk name plate? I wonder how the Nordisk Plate got on the tractor unless it was in the Nordisk Shops in Copenhagen at some point.

I've been told that few if any of these FE35 with Standard gasoline power were officialy imported to the USA by M-F. I've also been told that few gasoline ones were sold in Great Britton. Because of taxes most FE35s there were diesel.

Can anyone tell me where they WERE sold? Austrailia? Canada? ??? or How many were made?
Thanks to everyone who has been helping me understand these mysteries.
/Dick

Dick,

Just to clarify, the link I posted was to prove the dealership once existed, it was not to indicate that the link was to the dealership!!

My guess is that this tractor was given its Nordisk Tractor dealership badge (mine has one, too, for LenField in Kent, UK) at the time it was sold and after it had been checked over prior to delivery.

It was probably sold for export to CA from that dealer, and shipped across the pond.

As to the differences in grille styles, it is common in the automotive industry for some parts to be made locally to save on shipping costs and import duty. Locally factored parts may not be the same as OEM parts.

Therefore it is reasonable to assume that you have a Danish assembled FE-35 that was originally shipped out to Denmark as a kit of parts (KD), with a Danish-made hood fitted locally.

You are right on the tax issue - TVO (Tractor Vapourising Oil) was very cheap for a while, and then the tax was increased. Petrol was expensive and diesel engines suddenly got popular because diesel was cheaper and the engines were more fuel efficient. Hence, because of these factors there are more diesel than petrol or P/P FE 35s

As Henning says, its really not that much of a mystery, so I am afraid that you will not be sitting on a gold mine of rarity, but yes, it will be unusual in CA. Go to Denmark and you may find many more of them.

Hope this helps. Sorry for the delay in response, haven't been watching this thread.

Hi Dick, There are different serial Nos for ferguson tractors produced in U.K. or U.S.A. If your tractor is grey and Gold it will be a 1956 Ferguson, if it is red and Grey it will be a 1958 Massey Ferguson, both fitted with the 4 cylinder standard engine.

Dick,

At a guess the extra plate shows the company that imported the tractor, namely Nordic Tractors (Copenhagen) Ltd. KBNHVN would be correct for the Danish spelling of Kobenhavn, and I think SV is the equivalent of Limited.

Just my tuppence worth.

I have found a reference to them on this link.

Sorry the text is in Danish, but I think it only gives the details of the tractors as being petrol powered, with three point linkage and depth control, and costing (then) 9,700 Kroner, and that it could plough one hectare every 4 hours with a two furrow plough.

The rest of the text has me lost. Wish I'd spent more time with my Danish cousins . . . .Oh well.

James (and Hamish as well)
Thank you very much for this interesting information. This FE35 was purchased new in the USA, I think in California in the mid 1950s.

I wonder where the Danish company might fit into the story. The sheet metal radiator surround fits perfectly and seems to be entirely original but looks a little different then other Fergies I have seen pictures of.

Can anyone else explain the mystery?
