Fortunately, this question does not have anyihng to do with what kind of oil to put in my tractor but how much. I heard that it took 5 gallons to fill up the rear end including the transmission and lift. Just wanted to make sure that this was correct because if it isn't, then I got to go get some more oil. Thanks in advance!

The capacity is 6 US gallons- only if you remove all three drain plugs. Otherwise you'll add 5 gallons of new oil to the water and crud remaining.

I was wondering if you thought that it would be a good idea if I poured some diesel in there to help get all that stuff out. I might even need to move the tractor around a little bit.

Diesel or kerosene might remove some crud. Reaching your hand into the drain holes as best you can will remove some. Probably you won't get the majority of it either way. When you refill, just put in 4-5 gals, and let it sit a few hours and then check the level. Then add slowly, let it sit, check it, etc. If you overfill, draw it down to the correct level as too much might tend to bleed thru the axle seals quicker.

Thanks for the help. I know that it will be hard for the deisel to get where I need it from where I will pur it in but it hurt to try. I am mainly trying to get the water out of it. I am sue that ther is some crud in there, but the water is my main concern. Hopefully after adding the new oil, the lift will start to work again. Wish me luck!!!

I would just remove all three plugs and allow to drain overnight. This will drain almost everything.

What about using something like "heet" fuel system de-icer to get the water and sludge out?. This stuff works by mixing alcohol with the water in a fuel tank to increase its volume so it'll get sucked into the fuel line and eventually burned.

It seems like this could be added to a gearbox as well just before draining to help flush the ater out.
