I have just bought a TED20 which needs a little TLC. I am new to old tractors so bought the shop manual. Problem is that there is a thick rubber pipe hanging down from the bottom of the transmission below the quadrant on the right hand side which I can't find in the manual and which the vendor said was an external hydraulic line. But there is no return? Can anyone help this novice? At the present time it is just dragging along.

What Just_John10 says is correct, but if you do want to add a return pipe, it's easy enough to fabricate a cover identical to the one with the transmission dipstick in, and add a one inch BSP fitting with adaptor for a low pressure return.

Some have used a hose in the transmission filler hole in the top of the grearbox, but there is a risk dirt can get in past the hose - and then ruin your gearbox.

You should be able to get replacement high pressure hose from a local hydraulic hose fitting co.

If you only ever use the fitting for tipping a trailer, you won't need a return. But if you get a ditcher or similar with two-way rams, you will need a return fitting.

If this pipe goes to one corner of the large square plate under the transmission housing it is indeed an external hydraulic line. If you want to remove it you will need the special stop plug to block the hole, or, if the pipe is not causing you any trouble just fasten it up out of the way. The right hand side plug was used to supply a trailer tipping pipe which was usually made of steel but someone could have made a rubber one like yours.
