i have read all the responses from all of you on the hydraulic/transmission oil, i have a 1951 TO30,i changed the oil when i first got the tractor, i used hygard from a john deere dealer,was this a mistake to use this? what does gl5 or gl1 or gl2 mean, what does the gl stand for and what is the difference in the numbers?does the oil i use have to be a mineral oil? some of the places i've been to, it doesn't say mineral oil on the bucket.what about the oil mentioned from walmart in one of the other articles, it says gl1 mineral oil would this be good to use? when i bought the tractor the guy gave me a partial jug of quaker state gl1 oil,it did say mineral oil on the jug,i never used it i wasn't sure if it was good to use or not.how often should this oil be changed? i had a guy tell me to drain the oil in mine and put kerosene in it to clean it out,he said to run the tractor but not to use the hydraulics,when he looked at it it was milky looking said it had water in it,do you think its a good idea to put kerosene in it and run it and then drain it to clean it out or would this damage the tractor?

The kerosene is a real bad idea. You dont want to stir up the sump gunk. GL1 is fine.

Like Rusty says; anything other than GL1(80/90W mineral oil) contains additives that will react with(corrode) the brass/bronze bushings in the tractor. We've followed the manuals recommendations since Dad bought the TO30 new and have never had any problems. I bought it from Dad and will continue following H. Fergusons owners manual. When you drain the trans/hyds/diff oil from the common resevior remember to remove all 3 drain plugs to remove the sediment from each area as each retains about 2qts otherwise.

the OEM book for your to30 calls for mineral oil. BIG DEAN has a good artical on this on his site i'am no expert on this but when i worked for massey this was the no. one reason the three point would not work just the WRONG oil and i saw bills for 700.00 + from dealers that did repairs on tractors that did NOT need them. i know of two to five pumps that were replaced because the dealer said they were junk but there was not a thing wrong with them. i took two out of the scrap bin and did nothing two them and put them in tractors that the pumps were busted from freezing. my to20 is 50+ years old used ever day in all weather to feed small round bales 700to800 lbs and it has NEVER been apart ever thing is just about wore out but the 3pt will hold up and this one still will hold a grade with the back blade. i change the oil about one in three and use only mineral oil m-1103 from MF. but it's your tractor so use what you feel good with. good luck
