I have a '51 Ferguson. My PTO shaft is stuck in gear. It will not disengage. Also, the shaft is sheared off at the back of the tractor after hitting a stump. I have a feeling the shaft was twisted even before hitting the stump because it didn't disengage then either. I need to know how to get the shaft out of the tractor. I have tried to pull it out, but it seems to be twisted inside of the tractor. I also need to know what the best manual for this tractor is.

You may buy a reprint of the original owners manual and a shop manual from a MF dealer. Other publisher manuals are available at the left. I hope you don't have the trouble we had lots of years ago. The PTO shaft was broken like yours, and wouldn't come out either. Upon close inspection, the shaft was twisted between the pump and the transmission gear. We resorted to taking the tractor to a welding shop, where the guy cut the shaft on both sides of the pump enabling it's removal. Then we were able to remove the shaft pieces after much grinding and filing. Sawzalls weren't around then, so hopefully if this is your problem you can saw it now and avoid all that filing and grinding. If you're lucky the shaft is just worn and needs nudging to get it out, but you'll have to drain the oil to inspect it first. Don't risk damaging the pump! It's expensive to replace, if you can find one.
