Steering fluid question

can anyone tell me what to use for the steering fluid? i just removed my broken upper steering housing with the help of a friend and there was no fluid in it also what would be a good cleaner to put in the lower part of the housing to clean some of the rusty gunk out of it.

If it's empty, it might have a leak. You can go to 140 gear oil, or even a thick oil additive like STP, and be ok, and the heavier oils might not leak as quickly. Some folks with a leak use grease, but that isn't as good, as the grease will separate from the sector gears over time. Of course, Ray is correct per the manual, but it isn't like this is a high speed gear situation.

Same as trans/hyds/diff/ Straight weight 80/90W mineral oil. While empty you can drill and tap a pipe plug hole at the bottom of the cavity for flushing. Otherwise you'll have to remove the entire box to invert it for emptying. Oil level is at the center of the sector arms when full.
