I suspect I know the answer but what it looks like sure doesn't seem right. I'm leaking oil at the pto and want to replace the seal, I've removed the retainer ring, the question is does the seal retainer(the big steel insert) pull out and if so does the entire shaft come out with it, that's what it looks like but right now I'm not to comfortable taking the whole shaft out, if the seal retainer pulls out does it require a gear puller, and I would guess then the only way to press it back in would be to pound it back in, does any of this sound correct????

Mark, you are very smart asking the question before acting on impulse. I have a TO35 also and changed the seal last summer. Actually it is very easy. Once the bolts are out all you have to do is to take a long punch like tool and insert it through the hole on the shaft in order to be able to pry the pto shaft out. Now at this point be careful not to pull more than you need to change seal cause apparently you could have much difficulty to reinsert it to the point that you may have to open the whole back end from the wheel side in order to realign the shaft.
All you need really is 3 inches or so pulled.

Perhaps you know that already but either you have to drain the tranny oil or back up tractor on ramps so the oil level is slightly less than your pto shaft level.

Good Luck and ask again if in doubt

thanks norm that's just the kind of info I was in need of, I already drained the tran/diff body so that's no prob, but I was concerned about that shaft..... Mark
