I have a Ferguson ?TED20 with Zenith 24t2 carb. When I lift the mower and disengage the hydraulics the mower drops very quickly. However it lifts quickly once the pto is engaged. What could the problem be and how can I fix this?

By disengage the hydraulics, do you mean you depress the clutch? I assume the engine is on and the PTO is on. If my assumptions are correct, my first guess would be the relief valve in the bottom of the reservoir behind the pump needs to be replaced. Not difficult or expensive. Easier if you drain the reservoir first. Looks like spark plug and takes an 11/16 stubby wrench. It can be done thru the side access without removing the top cover. First, however, inspect visually thru the right side access while it is running and see if there is fluid squirting about from above. If so, my guess may be incorrect. If not, I think it probably is the relief valve. Don't put your hand in there while it is running. Hope that helps.

I removed the pump and cleaned the relief valve and replaced the control valve. (Could not source a new relief valve in South Africa). The lift now stays up without the pto engaged. Thanks a lot for the assitance.

When I push the clutch down and disengage the pto so that the hydraulics are not working the load comes down very quickly. I understand that it should have some pressure to maintain the mower up without the pump working for some time. It usually drops down in about 2 minutes.

With the tractor running and the right inspection cover off and a good light (perhaps both inspection covers off will help with light) look inside while someone depresses the clutch and see if you are getting spray from up top. If so, your problem is there. If not, my best guess is the relief valve in the bottom, about $25 at dealer. To keep from making a mess, you may have to drain a little fluid as the fluid level normally is very slightly above the bottom of the inspection covers. Others may weigh in with other opinions, but that's my experience. Or you can look for Zane Sherman who usually is on the N Ford Board and knows these lifts very well. Two minutes to drop is too quick. I had one recently that dropped a blade in less than a minute when the clutch was depressed. I replaced the relief valve and problem was solved. Good Luck.

One other area to consider of none of the above ideas work, is the pump because I think this vintage used paper gaskets in the valve chamber mating surfaces and the oil tube interfaces top and bottom. These will blow out sometimes especially this old. The TO30 went to "O" rings preventing this old problem.

Before getting stuck into the hydraulics under the hood I decided to adjust everything to spec. Unfortunately I could not loosen the control spring it seems to rusted tight. (See new post) Any sugestions. I am preparing for a long weekend on the Fergie.

Dear Phil. I pulled off the cover and inspected the hydraulics. Looks like there are no leaks. It probably is the relief valve. Unfortunately the valve is not available anywhere is South Africa. I will have to import one. By the way I am still struggling to loosen the control spring but I have decided to leave it for a while as I do not use the fergie for ploughing.
