My dad and I are rebuilding my Grand dads old 54' TO-30. Had the heads done and need to put it back on the block. Does anyone know what the valve clearance should be? Does anyone know what the head bolts should be torqued down to and the correct pattern?

Thanks for your help.

70-75ft. lbs. on the head. Torqueing should be with a center top, then bottom and continue in the regular zigzag pattern, top left, bottom right and so on till the end. Should be torqued in increments, not all at one time. In other words, go to 45 ft. lbs. , then 65, then 70-75. Oil before assembling them. Recheck after running engine up to normal operating temperature - same torque sequence. Valve lash .015" cold and .013" hot. Check the cork pieces in both ends of the rocker arm shaft....behind the cotterpin....make sure they're good and in place. As I recall....the rocker arm shaft is hollow and this is where the oil comes in to lubricate the rockers....must have! Recheck the valve lash after retorqeing the head. L8R....Fred OH
