I have to keep the choke pulled out on my to20 to keep it running . I have adjusted the carb several times just as the manual states with no luck. I am wondering if rebuilding the carb would be the place to start or maybe I am over looking something simple. BRAD

Sorry to butt in on this but there is also the possibility that the problem is too much air - i.e. an air leak somewhere between the carb and the combustion chamber causing the mixture to appear to be too weak.

If you can keep it running by pulling the choke out, and enriching the mixture (i.e. drawing more fuel thro' the carb) then I would question if the fuel flow is your real problem. It may just be the symptom.

For example, if there is an air leak in the throttle butterfly valve or the carb/manifold gasket is leaking, or the manifold gasket is leaking, you will get exactly this sort of trouble. Even a very small leak will give you huge trouble.

My 2 pence worth.

Thanks James. I completely forgot about that side of the equation. The throttle valve rod bushing does wear enough to cause this problem as you state.

Isn't that why these forums (or fora if I'm going to be picky) are so good tho' - get enough people looking at a problem and you get synergy kicking in - you know, that 2+2 = 5 stuff.

It'll be my turn soon enough to forget something, it's no big deal.

Have a good weekend.

Signing off 'til Monday

I believe in the KISS principle, so lets start with gas flow. Remove the gas line at the carb and open the shutoff valve. You should have a full line gravity flow of gas for at least 3 minutes if the entire system is clear of obstructions. If you do the carb is likely the problem, if not then you must begin cleaning the entire system beginning with the fuel line, next the sediment bowl and its screens. Your tank may be contaminated with rust, water, or many other things. One guy even found a mouse in his gas tank.???? What I'm saying is, insure you are getting full gas flow before you spend the bucks to rebuild the carb. If your tractor doesn't run with the settings from the owners manual there's a reason, just check the simplest/cheapest things first. You'll have to remove the sediment bowl from the gas tank to clean the screen atop it. Remenber that 2 full turns of the shutoff valve open accesses the main tank, fully open accesses the 1 gallon reserve tank. Visit a MF dealer and buy a owners manual, it covers every owner maintence item in detail.

I had the same problen with my 20. The choke linkage was hooked up backwards. You know what, it still is to this day. Have to push it in to choke. I have a spring under the choke to hold it out. Works for me.

If you need to keep the choke out, that means that the carb is not getting enough gas for the proper 14 to 1 fuel mixture.I have the same tractor, and on occasion the float was stuck in the bowl.Drain the bowl by unscrewing the bottom valve on the carb, then screw it again. This may dislodge the float and let more gas in.I assume that you have checked for proper fuel flow.
One more thing, turn the main jet out an extra turn. This should make a big difference,if not then you have fuel flow problems, and need to clean out the carb.
