Does this happen in any gear, or just one gear in particular? If one gear only, then it could be that you can cure the problem by taking the top off the gearbox, and adjusting the relevant selector (see the manual for how to do this). Getting this right is important, because as you slide the selector along the selector shaft you increase gear mesh in one gear, say First, and reduce the mesh on Second (or vice versa). If it happens in all gears, the worst case is that you have a terminally worn gear or gearbox, but that would be unusual. I think the hosepipe trick could be sliding a short length of pipe over the bottom of the gear lever, where it comes into contact with the selector mechanism. You would have to remove the gear lever to do this. This is to remove wear from the gear lever, and get full movement of the selector mechanism back. But it worries me - because what do ground up bits of hosepipe do to oilways and gearboxes? It's not exactly clean oil is it? Better route would be to build up the end of the gear lever with weld, and then grind it back to shape. Or to use something like JB Weld perhaps. Hope this helps.
