This morning I went to work with the tractor and box blade and the temperature wasn't to cold. It started right up like always. I sat there for a second and let it warm up and went on my way. About 30 yards later down the road it cut off and would not start immediately. I got it started and the same thing happened again but this time I never got it started. I think that it may have been flooded and would not start. I still don't know what the problem is and am wondering if anyone else has had similiar problems and could offer any suggestions. Thanks for your time!!!

There is a way to check condensors and capacitors (same thing-new name)....a digital capacitor checker will tell you what the capacitance out of the circuit is. Some multimeters (VOM) volt/ohm/miliamp meters) have a capacitance setting on them, you could probably find one at Radio Shack. An ohm/continuity check is about all you can do with a (disconnected) coil....should read very few ohms....but it won't tell you if it's breaking down after it gets warm/hot. Sometimes if the rubber boot covering the wire is not in good condition (or missing)....if you can see a bit of white/green looking down inside cap or coil. A bit of emery cloth rolled like a cigarette and twisted in there will help that matter. As far as a float sticking in the carburator....if I suspicioned that, I would take a screwdriver handle and tap on the carb bowl close to the fuel inlet a couple of times and if that helped you get it home, I'd install a new needle/seat assy and clean out the bowl and carb inlet filter in the brass fuel line fitting on carb. I would check ignition first. The classic problem with tractor that cuts off after warming slightly is a bad coil. It also could be the ignition switch or the condensor. If you check the spark when this happens and you have no spark or weak spark, likely it is one of these three things. You can jumper around the switch to see if that works and if so, that will tell you the problem. If not, however, it is tough to test the other two items. The condensor is the cheaper of the two to replace, so perhaps try that first. But again, it is more likely to be the coil. If you have good hot spark, then my best guess is you have something plugging your gas line and the gas isn't getting to the carb at a normal rate. When you stop, the carb refills slowly and it will run for a minute or so until it empties. Pull the line from the carb and see if it flows strong. If so, check the line entrance filter at the carb elbow. If that is ok, it could be the float needle in the carb. Conversely, if not a good flow to the carb, you could have trash in your tank. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the help. My first guess was that it was the ignition because I could smell gas after turning the starter repeatedly. So this told me that it was probably the ignition. Then I checked the sparks plug wires to see if there was a spark. There was no spark. I then checked the plug wire going from the coil to the distributor an dno spark was present there. I took the wire out of the coil and tried to make sue the connection was good but I had no luck. I don't know what to do next. Anyway Thanks for the help, it confirmed my belief

Hi Matthew, Like phil mentionned, it is a lost art to test a condenser properly yet it is cheap to buy, so this would be the first thing to be changed, then if no avail, coil and points should be looked after the first exercise. One point though concerning gaz. This year is perfect for condensation with the temperature fluctuations we're experiencing. You could easily have a water problem. I would drain the tank completely therefore enabling a thorough clean up and check your small filter at glass bowl.

Food for thought,

Happy New year Matthew and Phil (VA).
