I am restoring a 1951 Ferguson TO-20 tractor (serial # 52044).

I have had 3 occurrences where the 6 inch starter nose breaks off when you attempt to start the tractor. (starter serial # 1109457)

I would like to ask for help in finding out why this might be occurring and what can be done to eliminate this problem.

Also, I would be very interested in obtaining parts lists and prices for this tractor (USA only please)

I went through 3 nose cones on my To30 last year. It was getting too costly and too much of a pain in the @$&. So I finally took it to a starter repair shop and had it fixed up. The owner told me the armature was bent a little and recommended that I back off the timing a little. I think I went 3 degrees retard from what the book said. That was a year ago and still going strong. My girl dosen't work that hard anymore so I could afford to lose a little power even though I haven't noticed any loss of power.

We had the same problem on a 1951 TO-20 Ferguson back in the 60's. I think that this was caused by too much end play inside of the starter, but I am not certain. I now own the tractor and have not had any problem with the starter. I believe that the nose on the present starter is a welded one. I do sometimes wince when I let go of the starter before the tractor starts and then re-engage it before the starter stops spinning. That tends to bang it quite a bit.

Is your tractor still a 6 volt. I had trouble breaking the same part when I changed mine over to 12 volts. I finally changed back to 6 volts. Terry G

The only thing I can think of is that the timing might be too far advanced and is:

1) causing the starter to fight against compression and early ignition or 2) engine is kicking back against the starter while turning over.

THese symptoms will occiur with advanced igntion.

Does it turn over smoothly or does it sorta turn over in spurts ?

Ellis;

Had that problem with my TO-30. First time I had it welded. Second time I got another nose cone and shimmed the starter out because it looked like it was hitting the ring gear. Then I got ahold of my proffesional assistant and we timed the engine by the book. I&T manual. No trouble since.
