WHY DOES THE TO-20 BLOCK CRACK, I HAVE GONE THROUGH A MANY OF THESE TRACTORS AND EVERY SINGLE ONE HAS BEEN CRACKED, IM NOT REAL SURE BUT I THINK I WOULD RATHER WALK AND PUSH A LAWN MOWER THAN SHRED WITH ONE OF THESE, IF THEY HAVE ENOUGH HORSES TO SHRED WITH

I,ve got a 50 year old Ferguson , all that time on same farm in Canada , has done more work than half the tractors in this county , still going strong , still same block. Keep the rad clean and keep her cool in summer and lotsa antifreeze in winter . There are NO frost plugs on my motor---Bill

I believe it is dew to a design flaw. Not only in the Ferguson's, But in 8N,9N,2N and Allis Chalmers B,C & CA. They all seem to crack between the bores. Not unlike the Ford 351M/400 blocks built prior to March 2,1977. They had a cracking problem immediately above the lifter bores. Ford said it was dew to a coring problem. I'm told they left out some webbing in an effort to make the engine lighter. Just a thought.

You are correct on owner neglect. Most of these engine's have lasted for 50 plus years, and the main reason that they crack is freezing because of not using antifreeze or overheating because the radiator was plugged or leaked.

Yep! Some time ago I read from a survey that less than 10% of farm equipment was maintained according to the mfgrs. requirements. Since most of the Harry Ferguson tractors only offered a temperature gauge as an option, this, coupled with a lack of maintence, has destroyed many otherwise reliable engines. Most often a trash buildup on the radiator causes overheating, progressing to coolant boilout, then to engine damage. Harry Ferguson tractors are great equipment when properly maintained and used with thier size and HP in mind.
