Won't Charge

To make a long story short; My TO-30's battery died(original6-volt system) and I replaced it with an 8-volt(yeh, I know it wasn't smart but I needed a battery and couldn't find a six-volt). Also replaced the ampmeter because it had gotten moisture in it and wasn't working. After hooking up new battery and ampmeter, It showed discharge when running and when I first turn the key on. Neighbor said everything was fine, that I had just hooked the gauge up wrong. He disconnected a terminal while the tractor was running and said that if it wasn't charging, the tractor wouldn't run, so the problem wasn't my generator. Now, a week later, new battery is dead. Have a six-volt ordered but what can I do to keep running with the 8-volt, and where do you guys think my problem is(other than using an 8V in a 6V system? Any help appreciated.

I haven't used 8 volt, but I know some people who have. Here is the deal best I can tell by heresay: the 6 volt generator will only charge about 7 or 7.2 volts. So an 8 volt battery is not going to get fully charged on a 6 volt system. What my acquaintences do is put a periodic trickle charge on their 8 volt batteries to solve this problem. You didn't say if when you reversed the wires on the ammeter it showed charging... or not? That would have been a good clue. In addition to telling us that, while the tractor is running, put a voltmeter on the battery and tell us what it says. You did hook it up as positive ground, right? How long had the old battery been in the tractor? Tell us more. We'll try to help.

Thanks for responding Phil.

To answer you, I'm going out right now to reverse the wires on the ammeter. Yes, the terminals are hooked up correctly(pos. ground). The old battery was only 1 1/2 years old, bought it new for said tractor. Don't have a voltmeter,will use neighbors tommorrow. How can you charge an 8-volt battery with a 12-volt charger, or can't you? Thanks again.

O.K., reversed the wires going to the ammeter. Guage showed on + side when I turn the key. Started engine, needle went to +8 when reved up, dropped down to +2 at idle. Turn lights on, needle drops to +6. While I was switching the wires around, I also decided to run my ground wire from battery to a bolt on the steering housing, where it connects to the trans. The braided cable is in good shape but the back of the dash is rusty and I thought that maybe it wasn't grounding as well as it should. Ran a standard battery cable down to the housing after shining it up a little. I've also ordered some 2 guage cables. Hope this helps with the diagnosis.

Sounds to me like it is charging, based on the idle and revved up readings on the ammeter. I'm confused by turning lights on and it "dropped down to +6", but I'm assuming you meant -6, and if so that sounds reasonable too. Put a voltmeter on it while it is running and see what the battery voltage is. Again, I don't have first hand with 8 volt batteries and I'm not sure what kind of trickle charger you have to use (6 or 12 volt setting). My closest friend who used that setup has passed away. Perhaps others know more on that. The larger cables definitely help on 6 volt vehicles. #2 is better than the standard cables for 12 volt, but #1 or 0 are even better. A voltmeter is not much more $ than a two foot #1 cable....

Yes, Phil, the ammeter goes from +8 to +6 when I turn the lights on. This is with the engine reved up. Going to test it with a volt meter tomorrow. Will report back, thanks for the help.

I think that the ammeter is now reversed, because it should show a - reading when the switch is turned on if the points are closed. I think that your generator is not charging and the + 8 that you see when reving up is really a minus which is caused by the ignition drawing more current. What you really need to do is check the battery voltage with a meter to see if the battery voltage goes up when you rev up the engine. Also the battery voltage should go down and the ammeter should go minus if you turn on the lights with the engine off.
