Replacing the seals on a TE-20 project tractor. The rear axle seals are going to be a pain to replace. The Dealer Shop Manual shows a man using an expensive puller and special tools. Any hints for changing the seals without the fancy puller?

As David said, the inner seal is easy, just like he described. If you are concerned about the outer seal, the one on the axle, just take the whole axle to a shop and have them replace it and replace the bearings at same time, probably $40 for each axle, in my neighborhood.

In the UK a massey dealer charged me �168 for replacing the outer seals - and I already had bought the seals. I queried the bill and he showed me the MF itemised rate for the job. I already had the shafts out of the tractor.

I did this a while back on an FE35 and got both seals done at great expense by the dealer who said they have often had 15 tons on their press when getting the bearings off. Others just drop off after the collar is split. (You drill it then spilt it off with a chisel.) However, this is probably not necessary.

What (I think) is the situation is that the inner seal is the oil seal and keeps the oil in the transmission case. The outer seal is a grease seal and keeps grease (but not oil) in the hub bearing. It will also keep dirt out too. The rear wheel bearings are supposed to be repacked with grease periodically (e.g. 1200hrs) That would involve removing the halfshaft to do the job.

The point is that unless the outer seal is completely knackered it will probably keep grease in ok. The important seal to change is the inner one and that can be done without any special tools. It just levers out with a screwdriver and the new one can be tapped into place.

I finally figured out the arrangement cos I was wondering what stopped the oil leaking beteen the shims at the outer end of the axle casing and realised there isn't supposed to be any oil at that bit, just grease.

Rusty, are you talking about the outer most seal on the axle next to the wheel bearings and brakes? If so you will not need the tools they show, I replaced mine on a to 35 without speacial tools.

The sure seal sounds like the cheaper easy fix. By the time you buy the outer seal and collar it is more expensive than the sure seal. Thanks
