I have a Ferg TO 30, starts and runs excellent. I am having a problem going uphill, it seems to sputter and runs out of fuel. The inline fuel filter seems to go dry. If I let it idle or sit for a few minutes, fuel runs into the filter and runs fine until the fuel filter runs dry again. It only happens going uphill. I've cleaned the fuel bowl, checked the vent in the gas cap, it has a full take of gas, new inline filter. Any thoughts?

all earlier comments were very descript as well as accurate although it could be something as simple as the vent hole in your gas cap. Maybe it's plugged. If there is an air lock in the tank it will reduce the flow.

When you say "inline fuel filter" are you speaking of the sediment bowl that is attached to the bottom of the fuel tank? If so, it sounds like the filter at the top of the sediment bowl may be the problem. If you are speaking of an added-on inline fuel filter separate from the sediment bowl, discard it and run the line from the sediment bowl straight to the carb. These tractors don't need a second (non stock) see-thru filter.

Remove the fuel line from the carb, and check the amount of flow. This will give you a starting point. If you don't get full flow for 2-3 minutes minimum you must begin cleaning the entire fuel system. There is a small screen in the carb inlet that must be cleaned carefully (do not use air pressure!), remove the sediment bowl assembly from the tank and clean the screen atop the assembly, clean the screen inside the bowl, use air pressure to clean the steel fuel line while it's off. Use a bright light to inspect the interior of the fuel tank, you may need to remove it for a thurough cleaning to prevent reocurrances of your problem. BTW, the fuel shutoff knob has two settings, two full turns open for normal operation and fully open for accessing the one gallon reserve capacity.
