Torquing cylinder head

I'm a high school student and I'm having some problems in my automotives class. I need to know first of all, three reasons for tourqing the cylinder head, and second of all, i need to know the three parts of the engine that need torquing other than the cylinder head. If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it 'cause the assignment is due Monday.

Lauren,
OK, here goes:-

Firstly, you need a gas tight seal, and an oil tight seal, and a water tight seal, so torquing the head down will help the head gasket achieve that.

Secondly, you need to reduce the effects of expansion/contraction as the engine heats up and cools down - and ensure the mating surfaces remain flat (and therefore gas tight) during these times.

Thirdly, with a side-valve engine, the push rods to the tappets come up through the block to the head, and operate the valves. Torquing the head down will keep relative distances the same, so the valve operating mechanisms will work efficiently and at the right time.

Three other parts of the engine that need torquing:- Main bearing caps, big-end bearing caps, and the bolts that hold the flywheel to the crankshaft. There are lots more.

Did you know that when you torque up a bolt, you are stretching it? When you stretch steel it goes through an elastic deformation phase (remove the load and it springs back), a plastic deformation phase (remove the load and it stays in the same position), and then suffers terminal failure and breaks.

Doing a bolt up is more interesting than it may first appear (or maybe I just need to get out more) ;-)

Excellent answer - except you are talking about OVERHEAD valve engines, not side valve when referring to head torque being important to pushrod length/valve clearences, right?

Larry,

Good question, the way I've always seen it, if an engine had an overhead cam, it wasn't a side-valve, but if it had push-rods, it was, as the valves were operated via a mechanism on the side of the engine.

I've never seen an engine with valves accessible via a side panel - so you may very well be right on this. If you can put me right, great.

OHC or DOHC , Cam is in head and usually driven by tooth belt or chain.
OHV, has pushrods, cam is in block and driven by timing gears.
Side valve, valve in block and flat head. Cam is same location as OHV and driven by timing gears.
Valves are in the block beside the pistons.

Ford 9N, 2N and 8N tractors have a flat head engine. Fairly popular design thru the 1950s
in many cars, trucks and tractors.

One reason why torquing cylinder head is important is that cylinder head gasket is compressible and putting correct torque on bolts amkes sure it is correctly and evenly compressed. Bearing caps are important too so that bearing shells have correct "nip" and clearance on shaft journals.
