TE-20 Triumph Engine?

I stopped by and talked with the guy who runs Moon Tractor and implement in Hillsborro, Oh. We got on the subject of Fergusens and he made the comment that you do not want a TE-20 as it has a triumph engine in it and parts are impossible to get.

Now My TE-20 has a Cont. Z120 engine as I thought all TE-20s had. And I have not found it too hard to get parts.

Is this guy blowing blue smoke? Or am I missing something?

Jeff, the old guy might be lost in his own universe. Tea-20 and Triumph use a motor that is quite simular in all aspects but you can not enterchange the 2 from each other. The blocks and heads look almost the sam but the car has no provision to put the oil in in like the tractor block has and the head on the tractor has extremely samll intake and exhaust ports. other than this all of the parts in the car engine like TR-1, Tr-2, Tr-3 internal parts fit the TEA-20 engine. This is what I learned when a good friend brought me a basket case TEA-20 and he order the rebuild kit for a Cont. Z-120.

Jeff to answer your question the TE 20 had the Continental and the TEA 20 had the Standard Engine manufactured by The Standard Car Co who actuallybuilt the tractors for Harry Ferguson . This engine was also the TVO version in the TED 20 Yours Kevin

Hi Jeff and all:

Sounds like the American made TO's had Continental engines, and the TE's had Standards.

My 135 UK parts book shows the 87 mm petrol engine as an option in it.

Most parts are available off-the-shelf here in Canada and probably the US - A&I (a wholesale-only firm which has dealers across the continent) carries good stocks, and BareCo from AU has just opened a CA warehouse.

lots of TEA 20's came to Canada as well as Australia and many other parts of the world. The TEA engine shares a few common parts with a Triumph but since parts are still available for the TEA engine there is really no problem getting them from the UK or Canada. regards

My tea-20 has the standard engine, there was 2 sizes I am told, 2080mm and a 2085mm . Mine is the 2085. all the te-20s' and to-20s' have the continental z120's...

I'm not sure, but there may have been several sizes of [Standard] petrol motors used in tractors thru the years.
The 80mm-1850cc, 85mm-2088cc & the 87mm-2186cc.
Was the last one used in various MF35/135 in some countries? Does anybody know?
Which one did they squeeze into the Dexta?

Lots of funny little british cars used the SMC OHV engine. I went to Canadian Tire. We looked up a thermostat for a 196? Standard Vangaurd. They had it and it fit. I bet they could get a lot more stuff than that too.

I have both the Ferguson TEA20 with the Standard engine, and a Triumph TR3, and have rebuilt both motors. They are similar, and do share some parts, but they are definitely not the same.
I cannot think of a part I cannot get for the Triumph engine, and most are available from multiple sources at competitive prices.
The TE20 has a Continental engine anyway; it's the TEA20 that has the Standard engine. So the real story is you do want a TEA because even though it does not have a Triumph engine the parts are easy to get !?!

I have heard about the similarities between the Ferguson and the Triumph engine, and I had an idea of tuning up a Ferguson TE-A 20 by fitting a Triumph cylinder head to its block, together with valve gear, manifold and carburettor(s).
Are you able to tell me whether this will be possible without major mechanical construction work? Maybe a Triumph cylinder head will fit right away?

I dont think the guy is blowing smoke I heard that the Triumph and the TEA-20 shared the same engine , as wild as that seems. But im sure there are experts on the subject in here that could comment better than me. Looking forward to reading the posts on this one. Glad Tydings and all that good holiday stuff. Barry

Most US tractro used Continental engine. Most UK models used Standard Motor Company engine (Triumph). There's no problem getting parts for those in UK from specialists in vintage tractors. I get anything I need mail order although carriage to USA may be prohibitive.
