Now that I am ready to startup my newly refurbished 1952 TO-30,I was wondering about the use of unleaded gas in an engine that was designed for leaded fuel. A local berry farmer told me that he uses a lead substitute,another hay farmer says he just uses midgrade unleaded with no problems. A friend who used a Case for skidding out logs from his property said he ruined the old '55 by using unleaded gas. He now uses a lead substitute in the rebuilt engine. What have been some of the experiences of the Ferguson Forum members? Thank you.

I have been using unleaded for years in my old Fergie , no problems at all . Up here in Canada , we have an ethanol blend that works real well , giving it a little more octane at regular prices----My 2 cents ---Bill

I'm lucky enough to have a friend that was a H. Ferguson mechanic in the '50's. When I presented this question to him he replied: "Unless you use your tractor for plowing or other heavy loads for extended periods the new gas won't cause problems. When/if the exhaust valves begin to leak you merely do a valve job using hardened parts made to withstand the unleaded gas, the rest of the engine will be fine." So, I've been running my TO30 on unleaded since it was mandated with no ill effects. I also use unleaded in my super M and MF135, both run great. For heavy work though, I use the MF165 diesel.
