Te 20 starter and flywheel ring gear

I have a te 20 with the infamous ring gear falling off of the backside problem. I split the tractor and replaced the ring gear and flywheel with the later to 20 combination to prevent this problem. I reassembled the tractor only to find that the starter does not even come close to engaging the ring gear. The distance from the starter mounting flange is exactly the same as the former te 20 setup. I had no starter with this tractor. I finally received a Delco which I was told by the dealer was an exact replacement for the Lucas. The new starter came with a sticker claiming it was for the te 20 (odd, I've never seen this on tractor parts)Can anyone offer some assistance?

The part number stamped on the Delco starter is 10455 310 3F28. That is all of the information that I have. Is it of any use?

The starter that I got does not work--it does not extend far enough to reach the ring gear. I do not know why unless someone sold me the wrong starter.

The Delco should replace the Lucas and the Delco is cheaper. The gear on the Lucas is 1.150 when measured across the teeth; or a little biger than 1 and 1/8 round. It extends from the mounting flange about 1 and 3/4 total. So put a rule on the starter mounting flange and move the gear out as far as it will go. Should be 1 3/4 to the end of the starter gear.
