I just converted my TO20 to 12 volts. I followed the wiring diagrams to the T. I used a 10si altermator and a Napa coil resistor at 1.8 ohms. Problem is when the key is on (engine off) for more than 5 seconds the resistor starts smoking. It did run for about 3 seconds and then died. the light between terminal 1 of the alt and the ign still lights up with key on. Any ideas?

Thanks for all your help. My problems turned out to be just me worring that I was frying my electrical system. I found that the resistor produces quite a bit of smoke when first installed. The tractor died due to problems with the carb. Thanks again.

Make sure that your diode is not in backwards. Can you post a pic of the print?

Converted my 30 with the same alternator and parts. Did you put the strap on the alt terminals?
The light will be on with the ign on and engine not running. The light will go out above a certain rpm, I thing its above 1000 rpm. It will stay out with tractor running after that all the time. Check your polarities(+ and -) in the circuit. The system is now negative ground versus positive ground on the old 6v.

You did change the coil to a 12v one, right?
