Which is best -160 or 180 degree thermostat> The service manual says it should open around 160 and be fully open around 185.

You may use a candy thermometer(ask wife first for continued good health!) and a pan of water atop the stove to check for proper operation of a thermostat. A good 180 deg F stat should begin to open near 160 deg and be fully open at 180 deg + - a few degrees. Running an engine below its operating temp will cause oil dilution and/or sludge formation, plug fouling, and increased fuel consumption.

Thanks both James and Ray for you help. I found out that there wasn't a thermostat in the tractor at all!! The guy who had it before me didn't install one! I found a new one at my AGCO dealer. He said it opened at 160 and was fully open at about 175 so I think I'm OK.

On the petrol/TVO engines, the hotter they run the better for efficiency - so go for the 180.

Diesel engines hate getting hot and bothered and will not tolerate getting overheated - it's a recipe for trouble - so run 'em cooler.

Have a good Thanksgiving.
