TO-20 Rear Axle Seal Replacement

I opted to go the hard route in replacing the seal on my left rear axle - removing the collar and bearing to actually replace the seal. Rather than use a Sure Seal. Once I pulled the axle and remove the brakes I saw that someone had already used a Sure Seal before me...

Anyway I wound up drilling the collar to get it off. I have replaced the seal but am now waiting for the new collar to arrive. Could someone please confirm how they have successfully put this collar on.

I've cleaned the surface with emery cloth and intend to heat the collar to 300 degrees (F). Then drive the collar on with a piece of 2" pipe that I have cut 28" long. I plan on either using the pipe as a slide hammer or beating it with my little 4 lb. maul.

This may be a bit late for Tom T. but also make sure the leak is not from the seals/shims around the end of the axle/brake drum.

I've done the same repair on my TO-20 a couple of years ago. The left side held up fine and the right side lasted about 2 hours before it leaked, so I've got to do it again...Oh well.

My solution was to put the axle in the freezer for a couple of days. Then, I heated the collar with an acetelyne torch till it was pretty red hot. I dropped in on the frozen axle and just a couple of light taps put it in place.

Like I said, I need to do the right side again, so I'm curious about the Sure Seal. What's that and where did you buy it? Thanks.

Your plan will work just fine. I would beat on the pipe with hammer. Any rust etc. inside pipe will fall onto your clean work. I packed my bearing with grease and installed a new Sure Seal along with the regular oil seal. Should not need the Sure Seal but thought I would try it.
