jUST GOT A T20 WITH LEAK AT THE PTO.
I HAVE A 9N SHOP MANUAL THAT SHOWS AN OIL SEAL
AND SHORT PARAGRAPH ON REPLACEMENT, BUT DOES NOT
TELL ME IF I MIGHT BE IN OVER MY HEAD.
IS THIS A SIMPLE FIX OR FAIRLY COMPLICATED?
WHAT PITFALLS SHOULD I WATCH FOR?
ANYONE HAD LUCK WITH TRANSMISSION STOP LEAK
ON THIS PROBLEM?

I would definitely NOT use that stop leak stuff. The same oil is shared by the differential, transmission, and hydraulic systems, so I think your hydraulic pump would suffer.
If you park your tractor nose-down on a fairly steep slope, the oil will run to the front and you can pull out the shaft without losing too much.
If you don't have a slope you will need to drain the oil. There's lots; maybe 5 1/2 - 6 gallons. It might be just as well to do this anyway as over time the oil gets a lot of water and sludge in it, and it's hard on the hydraulics.
Either way, once you undo the four bolts, the shaft just slides right out.

Jim's correct! Do NOT add anything to try and stop the PTO seal from leaking, you'll just ruin the hyd. pump ($1000). Jim's also right about draining the oil completely too. First remove the 3 drain plugs on the bottom of the diff, trans, hyds area, so you can clean out the contamination that lies on the bottom. Remove the 4 PTO housing mounting bolts and the shaft should just slide out; you may need to use a log chain to snap it out if the shaft has worn places in it. The PTO bearing must be pressed off to access the seal. Reverse procedure, install 6 gallons of 80/90wt straight mineral oil to refill system and you're done. You can probably be done in 2 hours if you have a press and new seal on hand.

Ray, I removed my seal on my TO30 without removing the bearing from the shaft. Remove the retainer ring at the bearing side and pull shaft out with bearing and sleeve intact, the seal is in the housiing which now may be knocked out and replaced .

I can't do that Phil, I installed the 1 3/8" replacement shaft and it won't fit through the housing that way so I must press off the bearing. You're right though, the original 1 1/8" shaft will remove that way, I forgot thanks for correcting me.

Ray, I have both a 1 and 1/8 and 1 and 3/8 PTO shaft and I removed the seals the same way without removing the bearing. What are we missing here? Do you have a different 1 and 3/8 unit I wonder? I use the 1 and 1/8 for show as I can use the original cover! Crazy I know.
