i just bought a '53 to-30 which came with a dearborn 14-16 sickle mower, the top link bracket (the special one for the mower) is missing, and was substitued with two pieces of channel iron bolted to the draft sensing spring, does anyone know where i might pick one up? all other mounting systems are in place for the mower. Also how would this mower perform in general field mowing compared to a bushhog? thanx for your help.

The sickle bar mower is generally considered better to mow hay as it lays the hay out to be raked and it really doesn't much matter how tall the hay is. The bushog is better for situations where you may have heavier items to mow such as small bushes or brambles mixed in with the grass. The sickle mowers can be deadly on pets and rabbits, etc., as they often don't see it coming. Lots of three legged dogs around farms.

If you mean the hinged bracket that connects the draft sensing spring to the tope of the diff case, you can get these new from The Old 20 Parts Co. (email [email protected]) or second hand from one of the tractor breakers here in the UK - try Appleby's +44 1535 656608.

Sickle mowers (Finger mowers we call them over here - for obvious reasons!) are great for cutting for hay, brambles, ferns, heather, and long grass, but they can only handle moderate sized brush, otherwise you end up breaking the knives on the blade. The drawback is that they leave what they cut just as it was cut, so there is no mulching effect like you would get with a topper (bush hog).

If you're going to do serious mowing, use a topper, or risk smashing the sickle mower. I speak from (expensive) experience.

You might inquire over on the ford n board. Someone was was talking about one the other day. Maybe had one thet might part with. Don't remember the discussion but seems there was a picture posted of it. Worth a try. REM
