Glen,
I did the head on my TE20-85 a few years ago. From memory, what you say about the valves is correct. I think it's because the exhaust valve is a tad thicker because of the extra heat it has to handle and dissipate when it's open? Check which valve it is (exhaust or inlet) to see if this idea makes sense.

As far as 'acceptable wear' goes on the valve seats - you're 'in the area' anyway, so why not get new seats put in by your local engine rebuilder? It'll possibly save time and aggravation later - and you get to sleep better knowing the job's done for another 50 years. After my rebuild, starting it on the handle once it was run in was no longer such an easy job - compression was excellent.

When I had the guides replaced, I got 'self-lubricating' guides put in, as top end lubrication was never that good even when these (petrol) engines were new. Then followed that up with a new higher volume oil pump just to be sure.

FWIW, my tuppence, $0.035, 4 million lire.
