T0-20 hydraulic lift question

The lift on my T0-20 seems to work just fine with light loads (say under 100 pounds). When I put a heavy load on it (say 300-400 pounds of stone on a flat tray I rigged up with a 3PH) things are not quite right. It lifts fine, and it stays in position fine. But..when I go to lower it with the control lever, it hangs up for more movement of the control lever than it should, and then suddenly drops right down. There's no in between, either its up and holding, or it drops to the bottom when I try to lower it. Also, thre is a loud knocking if I try to raise it slowly just after one of those drops. Anybody got any ideas?

That last "knocking" explanation is not good. It may be that one of the two piston armatures are cracked off. Replacement of a piston is easy, but part of the armature could wedge between the other piston and housing, prying the aluminum hydraulic housing apart (crack). Then you have a $400 to $500 problem on your hands. Pistons cost about $30.00. I would not use the 3 point at this time. Drain and take out the hydraulic pump for inspection. It's easy and a good leaning experience. I went thru this about 2 months ago with my TO-20. Having only partial hyd. strength seems to fall in line with only one piston working. Good luck.
