PTO shaft,tea20

Now for another one, While mowing the other day I raised the mower with the three point hitch only to have the end of the pto shaft rip away. Upon inspection it appears that there is an inner shaft that goes into the rearend and an outer shaft that fits over the inner shaft and held by a pin. Any ideas for parts is this standard or a retrofit. Prior to this I thought the pto shaft was one solid piece. Thankyou again. PMC

Bet that gave you a turn (pun, pun)!!

Relax, it's a retrofit. The TE PTO shaft was an old size now not used, so many people fit an adaptor (the outer shaft) to bring the old shaft up in size to the current category 2 size. It's usually held in place with a roll pin. Easy fix. And cheaper than a new Cat 2 PTO shaft.

Lucky the spinning shaft didn't do you or the equipment any damage - take care at all times. These old things can still kill you if you're not wary of 'em.

please, everyone for crying out loud, make sure your machines have pto sheilds on them. I bought a complete kit from the NH dealer for just over 40 clams canuck. It is for a Ford 2910 and is easily adaptable to fergie,N's,Dexta, etc.

Kevin, Thanks for the tip re the PTO guard - I've been trying to find one for my Dexta for ages now I know which way to go. Again, many thanks.

And on Fergies MAKE DAMN SURE your pto spline adapter is of the integral overrunning clutch type. Sorry, I forgot this vital info in last message.

Kevin,

Good points, and well made.

I think we can all 'forget' safety on occasions, e.g. when tired, hot and hungry, and usually we get away with it. But sooner or later the luck runs out.

Keeping all limbs attached to your body in the correct places is worth more than the cost of the guarding/equipment involved.
