TE-20 runs rough

I have a '48 TE-20. When first started and running cool it runs well. Once it warms up it begins to run rough. The engine kind of surges up and down and I have to give it more gas. It eventually gets too rough. I just changed the plugs and wires. Could the points, condenser, coil or distrubutor be the problem?

Are those wires the right ones? Are they home rollies with the umakem ends that simply suck? I found that real oem wires with solid wire centers are lots better. After all they won't be interfering with your $500 cd changer stereo system will they?

Terry,

Firing order is 1-3-4-2 going CCW on the rotor. If your leads were wrong, it would just run rough hot or cold.

Coil and/or condenser could be the problem (see previous postings on rough running) but I have had trouble with a cylinder head causing this.

All is OK until the heat from the engine causes the head to change shape, allowing water into the piston chamber(s), and rough running follows. In my case it was due to one of the cyl head stud threads being stripped - so one stud only was incorrectly torqued up.

At no time did I see oil in water, or water in the oil, as the stud affected was between cyls 2 and 3 (no oil ways there!).

I hope that's not what you have, but it isn't a big job to fix.

Terry, As you've just changed the wires, (I presume you mean the HT leads), are you sure you've replaced them in the correct order? It sounds to me like you have one or more crossed wires. Remember rotor rotation is anti-clockwise so your leads should be 1 2 3 4.
If the leads are correct, then just work your way through the rest of the ignition system until you find the cause.

Every time my te20 acts up,(running rough) I adjust the points. the gap is supposed to be .020", but mine seems to like .017" better. For some reason, the point adjustment is more critical when the engine is warm.
